An emerging technology that will have an impact upon business is the Quick Response Code.

A quick response code is a series of little boxes that sort of looks like a barcode in a square.  People then scan the QR Code on their mobile device and are taken directly to the sights webpage.  The cool thing about the QR Codes is that anyone can make them.

QR codes will have a positive impact on business because they allow the consumer to have an interactive shopping experience and they can also target exactly what information they want the consumer to link through to.  This could be a special offer or promotion only available when people come into the store.  Thus encouraging people to come in and shop.  In a clothing store you could have QR codes on the tag and when people scan it they could get other items that match which would increase that stores average sale.

My personal experience (as a customer) of dealing with a Customer Relationship Management System

The majority of my personal experiences with Customer Relation Management systems have been very rewarding.  I have received a $15 voucher to spend at a Tapas Bar for my birthday and I have also received a complimentary offer to have my Make-Up professionally applied, also for my birthday . On both occasions upon receiving the "present" I felt happy, and I also I visited the business and spent more than the complimentary offer.    I also enjoy receiving emails and deals from group sites such as Grab One that have offers suitable to my interests based from my previous purchases.

There was one occasion that my experience of a Customer Relation System resulted in me shifting my opinion of the company from positive to negative.  I was one their mailing list, and was sent an email that had incorrect information about my prior customer relationship with the company.  Instead of an existing customer I was “marketed to’ as being a new customer.   I recall thinking that if they didn’t know that I was already a customer and value my business then I wouldn’t shop there anymore.  An example of how a simple glitch in the Customer Relationship System can have the opposite effect!

My thoughts on how collaborative technologies can support teamwork in business.

Collaborative technologies play an important role in supporting teamwork in business.  Google Drive is an excellent example of how collaborative technologies can support teamwork.  In Google Drive you can create and share a document with your team enabling you to work together at the same time.  You can also ask team members for help (or make comments) as you go using the chat function.

Another benefit is that team members can work on the document anywhere at any time.  This supports teamwork because it allows people from different locations to work together and also allows team members the flexibility of choosing when they get to work. This is very relevant at Unitec where team members have different timetables and outside commitments.

My thoughts on how new 4G networking technologies will affect the use of mobile devices in business.

4G (Fourth Generation) LTE mobile technology is on the horizon, and Telecom will be trialling it's 4G LTE network capabilities later this year (2012). The 4G LTE technology is designed primarily for smartphones and will affect the use of mobile devices in businesses in several different ways, essentially enabling people to communicate faster.

The main change that we will see in business is that more people will be using a smartphone. A study conducted by Ericson indicates the proportion of Kiwis using smartphones will increase from 30 per cent to 50 per cent over the next six months; it is my prediction that with the introduction of the 4G technology this number will dramatically increase because of faster internet access and the cost of the smartphone decreasing as they become more common place and new technology is introduced.

This will affect business because employees no longer need to physically in the office to check emails or communicate with clients, with their smartphone, they can communicate on the go!

My thoughts on the role of tablet computers in business

Since the introduction of the iPad in 2010, tablet computers have increasingly played an important role in business. There are many reasons that businesses have embraced this new technology including, speed of access to information, portability, a long lasting battery life and also the practicality and sustainability of losing the “paper trail” to name a few.

Portability and speed of access are key benefits when considering the role of tablet computers in business.  Imagine the role of a sales representative. Because of the portability of a tablet computer, they are able to take their “desktop” on the road, providing them with the convenience of being able to follow up on administrative work such as emails and scheduling their next appointment without having to access a desk top computer.  The speed of access enables the sales representative to quickly and easily show their client’s new product ranges through the company website, place direct orders and check product availability.  All this with the knowledge that the battery won’t go flat!

In my opinion, another significant benefit of tablet computers is that they are easy to use, which is a real advantage to businesses that have a diverse workforce in terms of confidence and skills with new systems and technology.  Because they are so similar to the smart phone and are touch screen, staff of different levels will be able to adapt to new systems easily.  It also means that someone who does not have a master’s degree in IT will have the ability to understand what is going on!

One of the negative implications of tablet computers is that people may never actually get the chance to switch off from work.  Where it used to be that you were unreachable after hours, now clients/ colleagues/ your boss can reach you anytime, anywhere. People now have the ability to easily take their work home, and there may be a greater expectation that people will continue to work at home and the lines between a “work/life” balances could become very blurred

International company GE is a real life example of how tablet computers are successfully being used to develop the internal infrastructure of the business.
